Made Beautiful by NATURE...

LION WHISPERER - KEVIN RICHARDSON

Picture

In this interview with author Veronica Farmer, world renowned Lion Whisperer Kevin Richardson explains that the solution for protecting lions and other carnivores is not as complicated as we might think.  He believes we can all play a part in ensuring we keep these great beings on our planet...

An excerpt of Kevin's story...

"In 1998, I visited a lion park and immediately bonded with two lion cubs there.  The people working at the park could see that connection and when the words “Come back whenever you like” were offered to me, I don’t think they realized what that offer meant to my determined nature.  For eight months, everyday after finishing work, I would go and be with those cubs.  After many months, I was pulled aside and told “We aren’t comfortable with you being here all the time.”
I thought “Here, we go.  I’ve pushed it too far and I won’t be able to come back.” I felt sick.  What they said though after that changed the landscape of my life.  They weren’t comfortable with me being there unpaid any longer, and I was offered the chance to work with the two lion cubs, who later became known as Tau and Napoleon.

THE HEALING POWER OF A MAN AND A BALD EAGLE

Jeff Guidry is a wildlife enthusiast and author of "An Eagle named Freedom" which has been described as “a hauntingly beautiful tale of rescue and rehabilitation.” Jeff is in the process of turning this beautiful story into a movie.

An excerpt of Jeff's story...

"Freedom’s home nest was north of Seattle in a tall Douglas fir tree where her family had been nesting for more than a decade. Most likely she fell out of the nest and had been there for a few days.  It would have been a long fall as eagles build the highest nests in the world.  When Crazy Bob brought her in, she was in bad shape.  Only three months old, she had broken wings, was starving and covered in lice. Kaye asked me to drive her to the vet about 40 minutes away and get her there quick.  It was kismet and the beginning of a sacred bond between us.”

MIKE BHANA - SHARK WHISPERER

Picture
Picture
In this MADE BEAUTIFUL BY NATURE story, Mike Bhana, "The Shark Guy" smashes the myths behind these extraordinary creatures of the sea..

"I have worked with sharks for 26 years and still have all my fingers and toes.  I am happy to get in the water with whites, with tigers, bulls or makos.  Most of the time I will do that without a cage.  It’s about understanding the animals and respecting them.  Some people are really good with working with dogs and I am good with working with sharks.  A good dog handler understands that a dog can sense fear and is looking at where you are putting yourself in the hierarchy next to them. Sharks are the same. When a shark first sees you, they are simply trying to work out what you are.  Their first reaction is to answer a simple question - are you a predator or are you prey?  To answer that question, they are looking for signs and signals you give off to understand which one of those you are.”

CHILDREN IN NATURE - ERIN KENNY

Picture
Picture
In this MADE BEAUTIFUL BY NATURE story, Erin Kenny shares why the lost art of being in nature is so powerfully healing for children and people of all ages..

"Running free in nature is just what we all did as kids; that is, anyone born before 1970. It never would have occurred to me that those opportunities for adventure in free exploration of nature, with its high imaginative play, self empowerment and places to escape to, would be denied to this next generation of children. Most modern children are continuously micromanaged and hovered over and children are inhibited from normal childhood activities and behaviors such as running, climbing, yelling, spinning, hiding, playing with sticks, getting dirty and going barefoot.”

SPIDERS

Picture
Robert Whyte, Australian scientist, photographer, author, editor and journalist is passionate about helping people let go of their fear of spiders and understand how vital they are to keeping life in balance on this planet...

"We have identified around 4,000 spiders here in Australia, but there are probably 20,000 species out there.  This is not just for the world of spiders, it’s right across the board in invertebrates; the beetles, the bugs, all these incredible colorful things in the rainforest – there is so much exquisite unknown. With my passion for protecting our ecosystems and the speed of habitat destruction, I knew there were thousands of species that could be wiped out if we were not careful.  I thought to myself, here is where I could make a difference.  At the same time it felt like such an incredible voyage of exploration. I knew I had to do my part to educate people about these creatures to understand why it was so important to do a better job of protecting our environment and these tiny beings we share our lives with."  READ THE STORY HERE

URBAN FARMING

Picture
Alexius Yeo is a man on a mission.  Called a "tree hugger" as a kid growing up in Singapore, he has refused to follow the traditional path and guided by his great passion for urban gardening as a tool to bring community together - he is creating a movement that remedies the social isolation within cities, protects sacred food crops, connects urbanites to eachother...

"Permaculture is learning from nature, the natural systems and patterns, it allows movement and creative process.  I turned my home garden into a permaculture farm, a miniature edible forest with 50 different types of edible plants, many herbs and plants that had been lost in the consciousness of Singapore. I began to share knowledge about farming and food with the local community. As people began to see what I was doing and became interested in what they could do in their own gardens, the urban farming project began to grow. I suddenly realized that both my feet were in! People were connecting to what I was doing and I had no choice but to let this work gather momentum and to be true to the trust others were putting in me. Urban farming became my true purpose."  READ MORE OF ALEXIUS' STORY HERE

TREES

Picture
In our first MADE BEAUTIFUL BY NATURE story, Professor David Haskell, author and biologist of the pulitzer prize finalist The Forest Unseen (2013) and The Songs of Trees (2017) shares a powerful tale with Veronica Farmer, storycollector.  In this first-person interpretation of their conversation by Veronica, read how we can find hope and ways forward to connect with our greatest connectors - TREES!

"Humans are connected as blood kin to other species.  Some of those kinship connections go back just a few million years in the case of other primate species, a few hundreds of millions with animals, and a billion or more for more distantly related creatures like trees and other plants.  If you follow our family histories back, you get to a point where there was a creature, a species whose descendants became either trees, primates, birds, algae or bacteria.  We are all related in a genealogical sense, and we are also related in the present day through the thousands of ecological interactions that sustain us every moment..."     READ MORE NOW...
